What is Disability Inclusion?

A Disability Inclusion seeks to include people with disabilities in all spheres of life for societal development by recognizing their ability, potential, valuing and respecting their contributions and perspectives, honoring their dignity, and effectively responding to their needs for functional contributions. Unlike Disability Segregation, Disability Inclusion promotes an integrated, mainstreaming and inclusive society for the benefit of persons with disabilities and society as a whole.

Disability Inclusion means (a) being accepted and recognized as an individual beyond the disability; (b) having positive personal relationships with family, friends, and acquaintances; (c) being involved in the development process of a society; (d) having appropriate reasonable accommodations for all persons with different abilities.

Including people with disabilities in everyday activities and encouraging them to have roles similar to their peers who do not have disabilities is regarded as “Disability Inclusion”. This involves more than simply encouraging the PWDs; it requires making sure that adequate policies, functional legislations and practices are in effect in a community for Disability Inclusion.

Inclusion should lead to increased participation in socially expected life roles and activities such as being a class mate, employer, employee, colleague, business partner, friend, community member, leader, spouse, brother, sister, or parent by, with and for persons with disabilities.

Socially expected activities may also include engaging in social activities, using public resources such as transportation and libraries, moving about within communities, receiving adequate health care, inclusive quality education, being employed in public and private workplace, being elected or appointed in public office, having relationships, and enjoying other day-to-day activities without any barriers.
